Looking out on the snow-covered streets of Berlin, one could start crying in despair, but instead, let’s focus on the future. A little taste of what we can only hope is coming, this long lost season called Spring and then, even better, Summer… Meanwhile, these great PAM swim suits make me just want to go ahead and book a one-way flight to the Carribean. A vapor seems to hide your face from view; your mystic eye open (is it green, grey, or blue?) tender by turns, dreamy or merciless, reflects the heavens’ pallid indolence. You call to mind white, mild, enshrouded days that make enchanted hearts dissolve away, when, agitated by a twisting ache, the taut nerves call the spirit to awake. (Misty Sky, Les Fleurs du Mal, Charles Baudelaire). Marlene,...

a couple of things on my mind
Alexa, Oma & Bella
Last week I wrote a couple of articles about the Berlinale Filmfestival for Vice and adidas Originals’ new platform : newsfororiginalgirls.com. Below you can read my article (in German) about Alexa Karolinski’s debut film “Oma & Bella”, a very strong and touching documentary about her grandma Regina Karolinski and her best friend Bella Katz, both elderly jewish...
Doha, I love you but you're crazy
A couple of weeks ago I got a rather exciting phone call, going something like ‘Hey Nina, do you want to come to Qatar with us next week?’ I don’t think I need to elaborate here, I immediately started packing. So some 14-odd days ago, I found myself in Doha, Qatar, shooting an advertorial for Volkswagen’s new Beetle for Vice Magazine. I styled the shoot and for a change,...
“It’s a little strange of course…” Gotta love these two and what they create together.
Rinus Van De Velde
And while I’m at it, here’s another very inspiring belgian artist, also at Tim Van Laere gallery, Rinus Van De Velde. He combines incredible large-scale charcoal drawings with rather poetic fiction, and he does it beautifully. See more work and the full texts on his site.
Kati Heck - new work
Kati Heck is without a doubt one of my favourite painters at the moment. When I was in Belgium last week, I went to see her new exhibition titled ‘Multikulti Sause’ at Tim Van Laere Gallery in Antwerp. It’s on till the 21st of this month, so if you get a chance, you should definitely see it. Here’s some of the work from that exhibition. I’ve uploaded the interview I...
I’m a little bit proud of this: an interview with me in the end of year issue of Belgian lifestyle magazine Weekend Knack. It’s part of a dossier about young Belgian people moving abroad to work. Interview by Michael Ilegems, photo by Dries Segers. Dankjewel Karolien, Michael, Dries
I haven’t posted much lately, but fortunately it’s because I’ve been busy. Here’s just one of the reasons why: My work with Daniella Midenge on the cover, a fashion story inside and a mention in the Contributors page. I’m happy. Click for the whole issue or pick it up in Berlin, Amsterdam, Switzerland or Austria.
This might be my favourite shoot I’ve ever done, because of it’s simple yet mysterious beauty. See all the photos in the styling section.
The first image is a new work called The Devil’s Dress, as part of his current exhibition at David Zwirner Gallery in New York. Other ones are some of my favourites over the years. More information here.
Cruising in VICE
I recently styled a ‘Cruising in Tiergarten’ inspired shoot for VICE magazine. Check it in the Styling section.
We are on ASVOF
Our lovely and very talented new friend Griffin posted our EREBOS film on ASVOF today. Very happy about that, thank you Griffin!
Knight does it again
Still from the video When Showstudio’s Nick Knight does something, he’ll probably do it right. He has, for a very long time and with this “Punkature” editorial for AnOther Magazine, styled by Alister Mackie, he’s done it again. It’s not a very revolutionary concept, but it’s one that always works - when done right that is. This shoot features some of...
Crazy Clown Time
David Lynch is considered (by me at least) as one of the masters of, amongst meditation and scaring people, breathtaking and heart stopping soundtracks. After a bunch of interesting collaborations he’s finally decided to mash it up on his own and is releasing an album, aptly named Crazy Clown Time, on November 8th, that he wrote, performed and produced himself. With some help of course,...
Bruno Pieters X Weekday
After a two-year break from the fashion circus, Bruno Pieters surfaces again with a signature style, but very fresh collection for Weekday. I interviewed the lovely man for VICE.COM, read the result here.
Gerhard Richter. Since my dad first introduced me to his work years and years ago, it never ceases to amaze me. Here, beautifully captured in a video by The Guardian as an introduction to Richter’s retrospective at the Tate Modern. Eventhough the Tate’s director Nicholas Serota seems to think he’s in a Bond movie, it’s still a great interview because of Richter’s...
“Erebos, The Protogenos of darkness, consort of Nyx, whose dark mists enveloped the edges of the world, and filled the deep hollows of the earth. Nyx drew these mists across the heavens to bring night to the world.” First in a series of photos and videos by Nicola Powell and me. Inspired by and filmed in Greece last August.
The SS12 collection by Antwerp schooled Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos featured amazing prints, as usual, but also showed off beautiful cuts and lovely volumes, making the whole very fun and at the same time elegant and sophisticated. I’m not such a fan of the almost Marimekko-like prints, but here are some of my favourite pieces. (photos courtesy of Vogue.com)
Very interesting ongoing series, titled ‘American Dreams’ by a young Isreali artist called Assaf Shaham. These works pretty much speak for themselves. The brilliance lies, as it usually does, in the simplicity. Look at more of his work (he also makes great videos), here.
In the mood for Greece
Off to real summer. Will be back in September with photos and videos that will make your mouth water.
Ah Antwerp, nice to be here… Here’s my article for Vice Style about the Academy Show last weekend. Manon Kündig
